This conference is jointly organized by the Latin American Studies Council of Asia and Oceania (Consejo de Estudios Lati
noamericanos de Asia y de Oceanía - CELAO) and the Philippine Academic Consortium for Latin American Studies (PACLAS).
CELAO was established in Osaka, Japan in 2003 to serve as a forum for multidisciplinary research on
Latin America and to promote cooperation with similar organizations devoted to Latin American studies.
Its current president is Dr. Enrique Valencia Lomeli from the University of Guadalajara in Mexico.
The first conference was held at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia on July 14th -16th, 2005;
the second in Seoul, Korea on June 21-23 2007; and
the third at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India on December 3-5, 2008. The fourth and most recent conference was held at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico on November 22-24, 2010.
CELAO's fifth international conference is at the same time the third of PACLAS. The Philippine
consortium was established in 2002 under the auspices of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines,
as an offshoot of the Forum for East Asia-latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).
Its members are Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Department of Foreign Affairs,
Foreign Service Institute, Philippine Institute for Development Studies (Secretariat), University of Asia and the
Pacific (Chair), University of the East (Deputy chair), University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas.
The twofold aim of PACLAS
is to promote Latin American studies in the Philippines and to contribute to the revitalization of Philippine relations with Latin America; it is an aim that counts on shared heritage. As flagship project, the first international conference in 2008 was held at the University of the City of Manila and University of the Philippines-Diliman in 2008, and the second at De La Salle University-Manila and University of Santo Tomas in 2010.
CALL FOR PAPERS:
The theme for CELAO 2012, "Strengthening Exchanges across the Pacific" has as its overarching object
the rich potential and actual cooperation among the countries of Asia and Latin America. It seeks to explore the
multiple dimensions of interaction in time and space particularly in what has evolved into the Asia-Pacific region.
Exchange involves people, ideas, goods and values; shared experiences and heritage; converging issues and solutions
even in divergent contexts. It presents a rich field for comparative studies between different countries and between
sub-regions.
The papers should address any of the following sub-themes:
3.Maritime industry (shipping, seafarers, ports)
4. Diplomacy, security and conflict resolution
6. Democratic transition, retrogression and consolidation
9. Culture and heritage: the arts, language and literature, history
10. Religion, gender and society
Please be guided by the following timetable for the submission of proposed papers:
Deadline of submission of abstracts (maximum of 300 words) - February 15, 2012
Notification of acceptance- March 15, 2012
Deadline of submission of full papers - August 31, 2012

CONVOCATORIA
Organizan conjuntamente este congreso el Consejo de Estudios Latinamericanos de Asia y Oceanía (CELAO) y la Philippine Academic Consortium for Latin American Studies (PACLAS) (Consorcio Académico Filipino para los Estudios Latinoamericanos).
El CELAO fue establecido en Osaka, Japón, en 2003 para servir de foro de investigaciones
multidisciplinarias sobre Ámerica Latina y para promover la cooperación con organizaciones análogas dedicadas
a los estudios latinoamericanos. El presidente actual es el Dr. Enrique Valencia Lomeli de la Universidad de
Guadalajara en México. El primer congreso se celebró en La Trobe University en Melbourne, Australia el 14-16 de
julio de 2005; el segundo en Seoul, Korea el 21-23 de junio de 2007;
y el tercero en Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India el 3-5 de diciembre de 2008.
El IV Encuentro se celebró en la Universidad de Guadalajara, México el 22-24 de noviembre 2010.
El quinto congreso internacional de CELAO es a la vez el tercero de PACLAS. El consorcio filipino fue establecido en
2002 bajo el Departamento de Asuntos Exteriores de Filipinas, como consecuencia del Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC).
Cuenta entre sus miembros con las siguientes instituciones: Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University
(Dasmariñas), Foreign Service Institute, Philippine Institute for Development Studies (Secretaría), University of
Asia and the Pacific (Presidente),
University of the East (Vice-presidente), University of the Philippines-Diliman, y University of Santo Tomas.
El doble objetivo de PACLAS es, por una parte, fomentar los estudios sobre América Latina
en Filipinas, y por otra, servir de estímulo en las relaciones de Filipinas con America Latina.
Este objetivo cuenta con la base de un patrimonio compartido. Como proyecto principal de PACLAS,
el primer congreso en 2008 se celebró en la Universidad de Manila (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila)
y en la University of the Philippines-Diliman en 2008,
y el segundo en De La Salle University (Manila) y en la University of Santo Tomás en 2010.
INVITACIÓN A PROPONER PONENCIAS
El tema de CELAO 2012, "Fortaleciendo los intercambios en el Pacífico", tiene como objetivo global
plantear las posibilidades tanto como las realidades de cooperación entre los países de Asia y América Latina.
Trata de examinar las multiples dimensiones de interacción en el tiempo y espacio, en particular en lo que se refiere
a la región del Asia-Pacífico. Intercambio es un término que implica tanto a las personas como a las ideas, a los
bienes y a los valores; experiencias y patrimonio compartidos; cuestiones y soluciones que convergen a pesar de la
diversidad de contextos. Constituye un campo fértil para los estudios comparativos entre varios países y entre
sub-regiones.
Las ponencias deben tratar de cualquiera de los siguientes temas:
3.La industría marítima (transporte marítimo, navegaciones, puertos)
4. Diplomacia, seguridad y resolución de conflictos
6. Transición, retroceso y consolidación democráticas
9. Cultura y patrimonio: las artes, lenguaje, literatura, historia
Deberá enviarse un resumen de un máximo de 300 palabras.

El Comité Organizador, que evaluará las propuestas de ponencias recibidas,
comunicará la selección de ponencias el 15 de marzo de 2012.
Las ponencias seleccionadas deberán ser enviadas a la dirección svetlana.camacho@uap.asia, en formato
MS Word, antes del 31 de agosto de 2012. Las ponencias podrán ser en inglés o en español.
Los textos deberán estar escritas en Times New Roman, tamaño 12.
INSCRIPCIÓN
El costo de la inscripción, que cubre las comidas y el material del congreso, es US$300. Habrá una
tasa de descuento de US$250 para los participantes que abonen la inscripción antes del 1 de septiembre de 2012.
