CALL FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE SECOND LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES CONFERENCE
We wish to announce that the Philippine Academic Consortium for
Latin American Studies (PACLAS) will hold its Second International Conference on Latin American Studies on
October 5-7, 2010. This is in collaboration with De La Salle University-Manila, University of Santo Tomas,
De La Salle University-Dasmariņas, Department of Foreign Affairs, National Commission for Culture and the Arts,
National Historical
Institute and the various Latin American embassies in the Philippines.
The conference will be hosted by De La Salle University-Manila on the first day (Oct. 5, 2010) and
by the University of Santo Tomas on the second day Oct. 6, 2010. The third day (October7, 2010)
will be a tour of selected historical sites in Cavite hosted by De La Salle University-Dasmariņas.
The objectives of the conference are:
to provide a forum that brings together scholars in Latin American
studies from the Philippines, Latin America, East Asia and other parts of the world and to enable
them to share current researches and create a vehicle for continuing academic and cultural engagement;
to reiterate that the Philippines and Latin American countries
have deep cultural and historical links, which constantly require new researches and studies,
and to make Manila/the Philippines one of the centers internationally of Latin American studies;
The conference theme is
"THE BICENTENNIAL OF THE INDEPENDENCE OF LATIN AMERICAN NATIONS"
Specific topics:
- The emergence of Latin American national identities, including the role of culture
and language in nationhood
- Independence movements, personalities and leaders
- Post Colonial Developments, including national and regional histories
- Parallelism in the Philippines
PACLAS, founded in 2002 and initiated by the Philippine's Department of Foreign Affairs, is a consortium of
selected Philippine universities and agencies seeking to promote academic and cultural exchange and to expand
Latin American studies in collaboration with academic institutions in Latin America, East Asia and other parts the
world. Consortium members are De La Salle University-Dasmariņas (Chair), University of Asia and the Pacific,
(Deputy Chair), University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines,
University of the East,
Foreign Service Institute and Philippine Institute for Development Studies (Secretariat).
Registration
The registration fee which covers conference kits plus lunch and refreshments, is US $150 for foreign participants,
PhP 2,500.00 for local participants and Php 500 for students (undergraduate and full time graduate students).
A discounted rate of
PhP 2,000.00 for local participants shall be given to those who will register on or before September 15, 2010.
Payment may be in cash, manager's check, or sent through telegraphic transfer, bank deposit through
Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS). Bank details of PIDS are as follows:

For pre-registration, participants must submit the completed Pre-registration Form together with

the Philippine Institute for Development Studies. Those availing
of the discounted rate should remit payment on or before September 15, 2010.
