SECOND LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES CONFERENCE
CALL FOR PAPERS
(Second Announcement)
The Philippine Academic Consortium for Latin American Studies
(PACLAS) will hold its second international conference on Latin American Studies on October 5-7, 2010 in Manila.
This activity is sponsored by PACLAS in collaboration with De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, Department of
Foreign Affairs, and various Latin-American embassies in the Philippines.
The venue of the conference in Manila will be announced in 2010.
The objectives of the conference are:
to provide a forum that brings together scholars in Latin American
studies from the Philippines, Latin America, East Asia and other parts of the world and to enable
them to share current researches and create a vehicle for continuing academic and cultural engagement;
to reiterate that the Philippines and Latin American countries
have deep cultural and historical links, which constantly require new researches and studies,
and to make Manila/the Philippines one of the centers internationally of Latin American studies;
PACLAS, founded in 2002 and initiated by the Philippine's Department of Foreign Affairs,
is a consortium of selected Philippine universities and agencies seeking to promote academic and
cultural exchange and to expand Latin American studies in collaboration with academic institutions in
Latin America. Consortium members are De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (Chair), University of Asia and the Pacific,
(Deputy Chair), University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines,
University of the East, Foreign Service Institute and Philippine Institute for Development Studies.

The conference theme is
"THE BICENTENNIAL OF INDEPENDENCE OF LATIN AMERICAN NATIONS"
Specific topics along this theme are welcome:
- The emergence of Latin American national identities, including the role of culture
and language in nationhood
- Independence movements, personalities and leaders
- Post Colonial Developments, including national and regional histories
- Parallelism in the Philippines
Registration
The registration fee, which covers conference kits plus lunch and refreshments, is US$ 150 for foreign participants and PhP 3,500.00 for local participants. A separate fee shall be charged for a tour of selected cultural/historical sites.
For local participants, a discounted rate of PhP 3000.00 shall apply if payment is made before September 1, 2010.

The Philippine Academic Consortium for Latin American Studies (PACLAS) will hold its second international conference on Philippine-Latin American Studies on October 5-7, 2010 in Manila.

Department of Foreign Affairs, and various Latin-American embassies in the Philippines.

The objectives of the conference are:
to provide a forum that brings together scholars in Philippine-Latin American studies from the Philippines,
Latin America and other parts of the globe and to enable them to share current researches and
create a vehicle for continuing academic and cultural engagement;
to reiterate that the Philippines and Latin American countries have deep cultural and historical links, which constantly require new researches and studies, and to make Manila/the Philippines one of the centers internationally of Philippine-Latin American studies;
to enable scholars to promote discussion and dialogue with the government and its local agencies, such as the City of Manila, on studies contributing to heritage and development.

cultural exchange and to expand Philippine-Latin American studies in collaboration with academic institutions in

FIRST PHILIPPINE-LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES CONFERENCE A SUCCESS!
We are pleased to inform you of the successful holding of the first Philippine-Latin American studies conference
organized by the Philippine Academic Consortium for Latin American Studies (PACLAS)
on December 15-17, 2008 at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM or University of the City of Manila)and
the University of the Philippines (UP). The theme of the conference was: "The Philippines and Latin AMerica:
Past, Present and Future."
PACLAS, founded in 2002 and initiated by the Philippine's Department of Foreign Affairs,
is a consortium of major Philippine universities seeking to promote academic and cultural
exchange and to expand studies on Philippine-Latin American relations in collaboration with
Latin American consular offices in Manila and counterpart academic institutions in
Latin America.

Call for Papers for Second Latin American Studies Conference
on October 5-7, 2010

A Latin American fiesta takes place at the Ateneo de Manila on Sept. 6-8, 2006 as the
PACLAS holds a series of lectures and "Noche Latina" to stir public awareness and enthusiasm in the region,
with which the Philippines shares a Spanish heritage.
On Sept. 6, 2006 at the Social Science audio-visual room, Felipe Diaz, Consul of the
Embassy of Chile, will trace "Chile's political history: 1970s to the present."
On Sept. 7 at the Faura building audio-visual room, His Excellency Mario Schuff,
Ambassador of the Argentine Republic, will show a documentary film, "Aspects of
Argentina," and comment on the themes. On Sept. 8 at the Faura AVR, Manuel Perez
Iturbe, Chargé d' Affaires of the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
will discuss "Venezuelan oil and geopolitics in Asia and the Pacific."
During these three days, students from the different member schools of PACLAS, will
exhibit aspects of various Latin American countries at the basement of the
new M V Pangilinan Center for Student Leadership.
On Sept. 8 at 6-9 p.m., PACLAS, in cooperation with the Ateneo Lingua Ars Cultura (ALAC),
a student group promoting appreciation for the humanities, will present "Noche Latina,"
a mini-fiesta at the roof deck of the M V Pangilinan Center. There will be Latin music,
dances, samba and Brazilian martial arts demonstrations, and a food sale. Winners of the
essay-writing contest on Latin America and the Philippines will be also announced.
The events are open to the public.
The PACLAS was organized by the Department of Foreign Affairs in 2002 to promote
greater awareness of Latin America among Filipinos, especially university students.
Members are the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, the University of the
Philippines, De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, the University of Sto.
Tomas, University of Asia and the Pacific, and the University of the East.

PACLAS is sponsoring an essay-writing contest with the theme, "Why Friendship Between Filipinos and

A CONCEPT PAPER TO STRENGTHEN THE LINK BETWEEN THE PHILIPPINES
AND LATIN AMERICA
Since 2002, the PACLAS network has fortified the linkages between the Philippines and
Latin American countries through its various initiatives. Realizing the valuable role
that the Consortium could play in furthering this objective, a working paper was drafted
to formalize the ideas of all the members for future programs and projects of PACLAS.
The said concept paper titled, Bridges between Latin America and the Philippines: What
PACLAS Can Do [English version]
[Spanish version] is intended to
be presented to the
diplomatic corps of Latin American countries in the Philippines to enable them to take
part in the activities of PACLAS. A meeting for this purpose will be held on 26 September
2005 from 3 to 5 pm at CTC 201, Manny Pangilinan Room at Loyola Schools, Ateneo de
Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City

This October 2005, FIESTA! Spanish Festival for Culture and the Arts is on its fifth year!
